Moroccan footballer killed fighting for ISIS in Syria

ERBIL — Moroccan soccer player Muhammad Hatim Alwahabi was reported dead in Syria while fighting in the ranks of the Islamic State (ISIS), local sources reported.

Alwahabi, aka Halawa, was reportedly killed on Sunday in clashes between ISIS and the Syrian opposition forces in Aleppo.

“His parents received a phone call from Aleppo confirming his death,” the Moroccan Northern Observatory for Human Rights said.

The source reported that since he left Morocco, Alwahabi has never contacted his family.

Alwahabi, 25, was a renowned player in the Moroccan national football team. He joined ISIS ranks in Syria in July 2015.
