ALEPPO – Kurdish officials have been holding meetings with several Arab tribes to implement the federal democratic system for Rojava and Northern Syria, local sources reported.

The meetings included the tribes of Aljneidat Alneim Alkhamis, Bubanna and Emeirat, who reportedly called on the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to liberate their areas in the countryside of Aleppo, also known as the al-Shahba region.

The Kurds hope to connect the local administrations of Jazeera, Kobane and Afrin, by capturing the al-Shahba region from the Islamic State group (ISIS). Until now, Turkey has pressured the US-led coalition not to support the Kurds to expand their territory in northern Syria.

On 28 January 2016, the Kurds set up a 13-member committee in Aleppo’s northern countryside consisting of Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds, called the Conflict Resolution and Relations Committee for the al-Shabha region.

“This is the overall strategic concept for liberating all of the areas that are currently under ISIS’ control,” Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security, told ARA News.

“The ethnic and sectarian diversity of areas throughout northeastern Syria where the SDF is waging the anti-ISIS campaign make this bottom-up approach even more important in order to reduce the risk of inter-ethnic conflict in areas that have been taken back from ISIS,” he said.

Speaking to ARA News, SDF official spokesman Talal Silo said that the SDF are not only for Kurds. “It contains every ethnic group, Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen and Syriacs. It’s for all people,” he said.

In April, the Kurds also set up a civilian and military council for the liberation of the city of Manbij from ISIS militants, including Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen. Until now, no operation has started for capturing Manbij and Jarabulus from the ISIS group.
