QAMISHLO – A third US soldier was killed on Tuesday morning in Tellskoff district in northern Iraq since the US started to support the Kurdish Peshmerga forces against the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group. The death shows the increasing US role in the fight against ISIS.
“On May 3, 2016, a Coalition service member was killed in northern Iraq as a result of enemy fire. Further information will be released as appropriate. It is CJTF-OIR policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities,” the US-led coalition said in a press statement.
This is the third US soldier that died in the war against ISIS. The first soldier died in a special operations raid in October 2015, while the second US infantryman died in rocket shelling on the Fire Base Bell in Makhmour in March 2016.
US soldiers are supporting the Kurdish forces both in Syria and Iraq against the Islamic State.
“Kurdish fighters have been brave. They’ve been courageous. They have been successful. Our goal is to provide advice and assistance to all those who can effectively go after Daesh,” US State Department spokesman John Kirby said, using an acronym for ISIS.
On Tuesday, militant fighters of ISIS launched a series of attacks on multiple fronts held by the Peshmerga forces including Makhmur, Gwer, Khazer, Bdadosh, and Telskoff, briefly taking over Tellskoff from the Christian militia of Nineveh Protection Forces.
In the attack, scores of Peshmerga forces were reportedly killed.
“The battle ended with the death of 121 members of Daesh (ISIS), the destruction of 18 armored vehicles, and 3 bulldozers, and the martyrdom of 7 Peshmerga forces,” Islam Chali, a Peshmerga Forces officer wrote on his private Twitter account.
“This morning at 3:30 am, the ISIS militants have managed to attack the Peshmerga’s strongholds in the axis of Khazir, the fight is still ongoing in the village Wardak, the ISIS has received very much loss and damage, the ISIS damages have not been yet confirmed officially,” the official website of Jabar Yawar, the spokesperson of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces, said.
“Meanwhile, the news sources issued that the ISIS militants have attacked the Peshmerga’s strongholds in the areas of Nawaran and Bashik in the district of Shexan by two suicide bombers and two explosive-loaded Hammers, but the Peshmerga forces thwarted the attack and detonated the explosive-loaded hummers and the two suicide bombers,” it added.
Also on Tuesday, ISIS militants reportedly attacked headquarters of the Kurdish Peshmerga from four wings in the strategic mount Bashik in northern Iraq, but the Peshmerga forces have repelled the attack, and the fight is still ongoing in that axis.
