Amman, Jordan – Militants of the Algerian extremist group of Jund al-Khilafa (soldiers of Caliphate) announced allegiance to the Caliph of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Abdullah Othman al-Asimi, leader of the Jund al-Khilafa group in Algeria, declared in a video message that his group pledges allegiance to the Islamic State and its Caliph al-Baghdadi.

“We are ready to serve our Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi under the flag of the Islamic State,” al-Asimi said.

Jund al-Khilafa group is an al-Qaeda splinter group, representing Islamist militants in al-Maghreb al-Arabi (western Arab world).

The group earlier carried out the abduction of a French citizen in Algeria, Harve Gourdel, who was beheaded by Jund al-Khilafa extremists on Sept. 22, 2014.

The Islamic State’s militants controlled large areas of Syria and Iraq in the recent months. The group is currently being attacked by U.S.-led international coalition’s air strikes in both countries.
