Qamishli, Syria – Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish forces demanded the international community to protect the city of Kobane  in northern Syria, against attacks launched by the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, following its (IS) control of dozens of Kurdish villages in the countryside of the city over the last two days.

The IS group is preparing to enter the city of Kobane amid a mass displacement of the city’s Kurdish residents, who reportedly crossed the borders into Turkey on Friday.

Activists reported to ARA News the preparation of the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga in Iraqi Kurdistan alongside with guerillas of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to enter the Kurdish-majority areas in Syria, to respond to IS attacks.

Speaking to ARA News, Mohammed Mulla Rashid, Kurdish member of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), said that what is happening in Kobane is an attempt to carry out a genocide against the Kurdish civilians.

“The matter is not just confined to fighting the YPG forces, so all the political and civil organizations are demanded to secure and support those civilians against the barbaric attacks of IS terrorists,” Rashid said.

With regard to the SNC (main body of the Syrian opposition), Rashid said that the leadership of the coalition is currently holding meetings with many international powers as well as the Turkish authorities to provide assistance to the Kurdish civilians in Kobane.

Rashid pointed out that the entry of Kurdish troops into the city would be difficult to a large extent for political, subjective and objective reasons; “especially the issue of the Turkish border, and the nature of the relationship between the Democratic Union Party in Syria (PYD) –a PKK-affiliated group– and Turkey, in addition to the complete blockade imposed on the city”.

“The situation in Kobane will improve in the next couple of days, and I think the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) is doing its best to providing support for the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG), with some caution to avoid outrage of the regional and international allies,” Rashid told ARA News.
