Damascus, Syria – On Thursday, the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met the new United Nations’ new envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, in Damascus.

Mistura has reportedly emphasized the importance of holding truces between the pro-Assad military forces and the armed opposition, especially with the growing danger of the Islamic State’s (IS/ISIS) militants –who control large areas in northern Syria.

According to Mistura, the expansion of truces between Assad regime and the opposition could pave the way for a political solution to the three-year war in the country, as well as helping the efforts to eliminate the Islamic State’s extremists.

“The United Nations will strive with renewed energy to assist all Syrians wherever they are and the Syrian government in order to facilitate the reduction of violence,” the new U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura said in a press statement following his meeting with Assad on Thursday.

Mistura also emphasized that his talks in Syria in this sensitive phase could help facilitating the U.S. campaign to combat ISIS.

“The two should go hand in hand,” the U.N. envoy said. “An all-inclusive political process in Syria will contribute to isolating the terrorists from the rest of the population.”

Remarks issued by Mr. Assad’s office following his meeting with Mr. de Mistura suggested a readiness to collaborate with the new envoy.

“What Syria and the region is facing has made combating terrorism a priority, because it’s the biggest danger confronting everyone,” the statement said. “Any progress on this front will bolster the national reconciliations that have succeeded so far in many Syrian areas and that can be the starting point for a comprehensive intra-Syrian dialogue.”

However, the Deputy Spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Marie Harf, said that the American Administration has precluded the possibility of coordinating with the Syrian regime regarding the expected military operations against strongholds of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in Syria.
