ISIS uses civilians as human shields in Syria’s Qamishli

Urfa, Turkey – The Democratic Union Party in Syria (PYD) accused militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) of using civilians as human shields during military operations in southern Qamishli, in northeastern Syria.

The PYD issued a statement on Monday saying that IS was the reason for the death of more than 50 civilians near the town of Tel Hamis during operations against the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –linked to the PYD.

“As our forces (YPG) advance in southern Qamishli to regain control of IS-held areas, IS extremists are using civilians as human shields, after which they accuse the YPG of targeting civilians,” the PYD-linked Auto-Administration in Qamishli city said on Monday.

“The YPG leadership has repeatedly called on civilians to evacuate these areas before starting military operations against IS strongholds and to avoid civilian casualties; however, IS is forcing those people to head to the front lines in order to get killed and claim later that the YPG is guilty of their death,” officials of the Auto-Administration said.

According to local sources, dozens of civilians in the villages of Tel Khalil and Hadyate in Tel Hamis area were summarily executed by militants of the Islamic State (IS) on Monday, under the pretext of refusing IS orders to carry weapons and fight alongside its militants against the Kurdish forces of the YPG.

“The IS deliberately burned and destroyed more than 60 houses of civilians who have fled their villages following the control of the Islamic State,” a resident of Tel Hamis, under the condition of anonymity, told ARA News.

Meanwhile, the Syrian opposition accused the Kurdish forces of the YPG of committing massacres against civilians in the villages surrounding the town of Tel Hamis south of the city of Qamishli. However, the YPG forces denied the accusations.

Noteworthy, IS militant fighters targeted with several neighbourhoods in the city of Qamishli with mortar shells during the last two days, killing and injuring dozens of civilians, local sources reported.
