Urfa, Turkey – At least 19 militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) were killed and dozens others injured after being ambushed by the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) in the countryside of Kobane, northern Syria.
The YPG forces planned an ambush near the village of Hidoqli (southwest of Kobane) and the village of Gre Doli (west of Kobane) on Thursday midnight, killing at least 19 militant fighters of the Islamic State and injuring many others, activists said.
Kurdish forces of the YPG targeted IS fighters following the U.S.-led International Coalition’s air strikes against IS militant strongholds near the city of Kobane.
Speaking to ARA News on the phone, media activist Omid Khoshman, who is accompanying YPG forces in Kobane, said: “YPG fighters attacked IS militants while they were heading to Kobane from Hidoqli and killed some of them, which caused intensive clashes between the two sides.”
Khoshman added that 19 IS members were killed, and YPG took several others as hostages.
Military sources inside Kobane mentioned that the YPG forces were fighting IS militants who besieged the city from three sides, forcing the latter to withdraw a few kilometers amid intensive clashes.
“YPG took the village of Rofi -south of Kobane- as a stronghold, and they also controlled the village of Hidoqlo at well as the outskirts of Tel Gazelle village following the IS withdrawal,” Khoshman reported.
Eleven kilometers west of Kobane, clashes are still going on. However, the YPG was able to intercept the IS group at the eastern side of the city on the outskirts of the village of Ayn al-Bat (15km east of Kobane), according to Khoshman.
Meanwhile, the YPG Media Center announced on Friday morning that its forces regained control of the village of al-Hlinj and its surroundings “in a military operation that caused the death and injury of dozens of IS members as well as destroying a Doshka machine gun type 23 and another one type 14.5”.
The statement also said that the YPG retook the village of Kulilki and destroyed a Doshka type 23 in Savamiay Rofi -south of Hlinj.
In the village of Sasoni, 9 IS militants were reported dead on Friday amid attacks by the YPG forces, according to the Media Center.
