Qamishli, Syria – On Sunday, clashes broke out between Kurdish fighters of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and militants of the Islamic State (IS) in the Syrian town of Jazaa near the Iraqi borders.

The border town of Jazaa in the countryside of Qamishli, northeastern Syria, saw sporadic clashes between the YPG and IS members over the last two days, with an apparent escalation on Sunday, local sources reported.

At least 17 fighters of the Islamic State were killed, according to the YPG Media Center.

The YPG Media Center also announced the death of 8 of its fighters during clashes with IS in Jazaa.

The source confirmed the death of Abu Darya, commander and leader of Islamic State (IS) in Jazaa town.

The YPG also claimed engagement in clashes against IS militants near Yaroubia (Rabiaa) border crossing last week.

“The YPG resistance which began in Shingal and Rabiaa is continuously progressing, and the victory in Jazaa is a clear indication of our advance against IS terrorists,” the YPG Media Center said in a statement.

According to the YPG, several Arab tribal groups are supporting the Islamic State in the struggle against the Kurdish forces in Syria, including the clans of Baggara, Hamedan and Zirga, who reportedly announced allegiance to IS.

“These tribal groups brought their troops and heavy weapons from the town of al-Hol in the countryside of al-Hasakah. They also received reinforcements from Deir ez-Zor city and some Iraqi areas.”

Polat Jan, the head of the YPG Media Center, posted on his Facebook page that the Kurdish fighters killed five leading members of the Islamic State during the last four days in Jazaa town, northeastern Syria.

“Sarkawt Abu Bakir Sora Abdo, Iraqi leading member of IS was killed by our (YPG) forces,”Jan stated, adding the names of other IS leaders: Abu Maria (known as Hayman Yassin Majeed), Abu Osama al-Iraqi (leader of IS in al-Hasakah), Abu Azzam (Assistant of Abu Osama al-Iraqi) , Abu Maaz Ansari (a Syrian Arab from Qamishli), in addition to Abu Omar al-Turki. According to Jan, all these prominent members of IS were killed by the YPG during the recent clashes in Jazaa.
