Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Italian Defence Minister, Roberta Pinotti, released a statement on Wednesday expressing Italy’s intention to supply weapons to the Pehsmerga forces of Iraqi Kurdistan –who are fighting against militants of the Islamic State (IS) backed by U.S. warplanes.

Pinotti said that Italy will provide the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga with light and portable arms to enhance their position against Sunni insurgents.

“There will be checks in place to make sure the weapons safely get where they are supposed to,” she said.

The Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) welcomed the Italian decision, urging the international community to increase support to the Peshmerga army “which protects Iraqi minorities against IS-led terrorism”.

Coinciding with the U.S. decision to intensify air strikes against strongholds of the Islamic State in northern Iraq, Germany agreed to support the Peshmerga in their fight against Islamist militants.

Germany reportedly expressed its intention to supply weapons to the Peshmerga forces. During a press conference in Berlin, German Defence Minister said they will supply arms and ammunition to Iraqi Kurdish forces.

Noteworthy, more than 1.5 million Iraqis were recently displaced following the control of IS militants in several Iraqi areas.
