Iraq: Yezidi MP injured in helicopter crash

Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan – The Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced on Tuesday the fall of an Iraqi helicopter over Sinjar Mount during evacuation the displaced Yezidis –who were attacked in Shingal area by al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (IS) over the past two weeks.

According to media reports, the incident resulted in the crash of the helicopter and the death of the pilot, as well the injury of 20 others, including the Yezidi Member of Iraqi Parliament Vian al-Dakheel, and the son of the secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Iraq (KDP) Fadhil Mirani.

The wounded were immediately transferred to hospitals in the Kurdistan Region, while medical surces from the city of Erbil (Hewler), the capital of Kurdistan Region, reported that the al-Dakheel is in good health after treatment.

The helicopter’s crash came amid wide exodus the predominantly-Yezidi Kurdish Sinjar area witnessed, especially towards the Kurdistan region of Iraq and areas with Kurdish majority in Syria.

Meanwhile, about twenty thousand displaced Yezidis crossed border into Syria, before being transferred to Newroz camp near the city of Derik, while others returned to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, activists in Derik told ARA News on Wednesday.

Notably, the American warplanes launched several air raids on the IS-held sites in Sinjar area and Makhmour town near Erbil, in addition to dropping humanitarian aid to the displaced people stranded in the Mount of Sinjar during the past few days.
